Lot 2035 S. KING & E. ATKINSON CUSTOM MAUSER BANNER
.416 RIGBY BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 416 Rigby. S# B57308. Bbl. 24". Starting life as a Mauser Standard Modell bolt action rifle, this example was subsequently reworked and customized by several gunsmiths working in conjunction with one another, each specialized in their respective fields to bring this rifle (amongst several others) to fruition. The information regarding the gunsmiths came to light after extensive research by the consignor, who personally spoke with several of the individuals who created this rifle. These rifles were created from two Mauser Standard Modell actions, which were cut in half (off center), and were welded back together utilizing special tooling and jigs to magnum length specifications, with many small parts/components being custom made from scratch. While originally made for themselves, some of these rifles were eventually traded or sold over time. The top of the Douglas Supreme bbl. is engraved "S. KING - E. ATKINSON ASTORIA, OR", with "416 RIGBY" engraved on the left towards the breech. The receiver retains its original factory markings at the chamber ring, consisting of the Mauser banner logo over the top, with crown over "B", "G", "U", and "N" proofs, followed by the S# on the left. Left receiver wall is engraved "MAUSER - WERKE ASTROIA AC.". Metal components exhibit a dull blue finish overall, save for on the extractor, which is in-the-white and the follower, which is polished in-the-white. Custom 1-piece pistol grip stock features checkered panels on the forearm and wrist, custom hinged floorplate, a steel grip cap featuring a hinged door (containing a small hex screwdriver and a spare blade front sight), a cheek rest on the butt, a black synthetic widow's peak spacer, as well as a London Guns red rubber recoil pad. Toeline of the buttstock is fitted with a sling swivel stud, with the bbl. featuring an banded swivel stud. Ramped, hooded, and brass beaded blade front sight with 3-leaf Express rear sight consisting of 1 fixed leaf and 3 folding leafs. The rear of the receiver features a custom grooved square bridge, added via tig welded shaped steel bars. Semi-spherical bolt knob features a grooved flat panel on the underside. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: scans of photos detailing this rifle when it was in-the-white. CONDITION: metal components retain virtually all of their dull blue finish, exhibiting some light superficial handling marks, as well as some light pitting beneath the finish on the receiver. Bolt body exhibits some operational wear. Mirror bore, exhibiting some apparent carbon build up, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Wood stock shows some superficial marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sound. PROVENANCE: From the Buckstix Collection. (25-6459/MLW). MODERN. $3,000-5,000.
